Modern Elegance Meets Old-World Charm

Amidst the verdant hills of Nuwara Eliya lies The Bellwood Manor, a family owned and operated luxury boutique hotel that harmoniously blends history with modernity, to create a truly unique hideaway in the beautiful highlands of Sri Lanka. Our story dates back to the 19th Century, during the British Colonial period, when the quaint mountain region of Nuwara Eliya was developed as a holiday destination referred to as ‘Little England’.

Built in the style of an English country manor, ‘The Bellwood’ functioned as a guest house in the 1880s. It was subsequently renovated in the 1920s and operated as the Junior Welcombe Hotel into the 1940s. Having been purchased by the current owners in 1968, the property continued to be a space of warm comfort and joyous hospitality for over five decades. Today, The Bellwood Manor has been thoughtfully restored, with great care going in to preserve its elegant Victorian architecture while incorporating modern day luxuries for an indulgent holiday in the hills.

1920s

The Milne’s Move in to the Bellwood

The Bellwood Bungalow was bought by M.S. Milne in the 1920s and became the Milne family home for a period.

1930s

The Junior Welcombe Hotel

The property was renovated by M. S. Milne in the 1930s and operated as the Junior Welcombe Hotel during the latter part of the British colonial era in Ceylon.
